Android XR is Coming Soon for Headsets and Glasses

While it seemed that there was going to be no mention of Android during this year’s Google I/O Conference, the Mountain View tech giant topped off the show with a demo featuring Android XR, a wearable platform based on the world’s most popular mobile operating system. Google says that it has designed Android XR with Gemini AI at the centre, but what else did it reveal?

Android XR is designed to run on devices like Samsung’s Project Moohan headset, as well as a variety of other products including glasses from different brands and manufacturers. As shown during the I/O demo, XR will work with headwear equipped with cameras, microphones and speakers, and will work with smartphones to access apps with hands-free operation.

Users will be able to issue commands to Gemini on the platform for a variety of tasks, such as making appointments, messaging contacts, receiving turn-by-turn directions, hands-free camera operation, and even live language translation.

Google adds that it’s been working with eyewear brands like Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to develop Android XR glasses, with plans to work with Kering Eyewear in the future. The company is also continuing its collaboration with Samsung for continued work on Android XR to glasses, and is currently gathering feedback on prototypes with testers.
