Free Email Account Backup Tool Vanderplanki

MailStore Home has been my go-to email backup solution for over a decade. The free solution for home users is easy to use, includes search functionality across all archived emails, and much more.

Vanderplanki, which sounds like a small town somewhere in Northern Europe, is an email backup solution. It is developed by the founders of MailStore, who sold MailStore to Carbonite.

Key Features:

  • Back up all IMAP email accounts (notable exception Microsoft Outlook, but this is planned).
  • Archive EML or MSG emails.
  • Support for storing email archives in one or multiple locations.
  • End-to-end encryption and zero-knowledge architecture.
  • Integrated search to find archived emails quickly.
  • Document backup also supported.

Cross-platform and free to use

The software is available for Windows, Linux and Mac systems. The base version, called Basic, is free to use. Unlike MailStore Home, which limits free use to Home users, it is also free for organizations.

Users can archive up to five email accounts using the free version and are limited when it comes to saving archives in the cloud.

Word of warning: The main downside, for the moment at least, is that the application appears to be only available in German. I could not find an option to change the interface language; no such option exists in the program settings.

Vanderplanki Email Archive Software

You need a license and for that, it is necessary to provide the makers with a valid email address. The address gets verified and the free license code is then sent to the address.

The interface looks very clean and modern. You are asked to display and save the recovery key, which is the only option to access the email archive should you lose the password that you need to provide as well.

Once that is out of the way, you may start using the solution. First, you may want to set up archive storage. You can pick any location on the local system, network shares, external hard drives, optical storage, or cloud storage.

Next thing you do is create an archive. Free users get to create just one while subscribers get up to five. Archiving an email address is relatively simple. Once you have selected an archive, you simply pick the email archive option from its page.

You are asked to type the email address and provide information about mail servers and the account password.

Vanderplanki handles the rest from that moment on. It uses end-to-end encryption to protect emails in transit and at rest. Even the makers of the service can't access email thanks to its zero trust architecture.

The program includes options to back up documents as well. All archived files, emails or documents, can be exported at any time. The developers have created an open source reader that can read archived files independently of the Vanderplanki application.

Closing Words

Vanderplanki is a promising email backup solution. It is based on a zero-trust architecture and uses end-to-end encryption for files in transit and at rest. It lacks a few features, notably Microsoft Outlook support, scheduled backups or support for non-German languages, but these are likely coming in the future.

Vanderplanki could have a bright future in the email archiving space, if the developers introduce the missing features.

Now You: do you back up your email accounts regularly? How do you do it? Feel free to leave a comment down below.
