Change can be good, but not always. That's the approach Samsung has taken to some components on its flagship phones that don't get swapped out as frequently as one might think they would, and even if fans would like to see more movement on that front.

The selfie camera on its flagship Galaxy S series is a good example of this. The same sensor has been retained for multiple generations, and as it stands, the very same sensor is being used for the upcoming Galaxy S25 Edge as well.

Expect decent results from the Galaxy S25 Edge's selfie camera

Samsung is reportedly using the same S5K3LU sensor for the Galaxy S25 Edge that it has used for the flagship series since 2023. This very sensor performs selfie duties on the entire Galaxy S23, Galaxy S24, and Galaxy S25 series.

The S5K3LU is a 1/3.2″ sensor with a pixel size of 1.12μm. In addition to dual-pixel autofocus support, the sensor also has dual-pixel RGB pattern and the capability to record 4K video at 60fps and 1080p at 120fps.

We've generally come away impressed with the performance of this sensor on existing devices. Our Galaxy S25 Ultra review highlighted that the camera is capable of capturing more accurate skin tones. Our Galaxy S24 Ultra review mentioned that selfies taken outdoors in daylight have great levels of details, with the software processing doing the rest to deliver a good overall result.

It's good to see that Samsung has preferred parity for the Galaxy S25 Edge, instead of either downgrading the selfie camera sensor or opting for a newer sensor that's not a proven commodity as the S5K3LU.

The Galaxy S25 Edge is expected to be unveiled on May 13 followed by the device hitting shelves in South Korea and China a week later. Its US launch may take place by May 30.
