Galaxy Z Fold 7 might just be the world’s thinnest foldable smartphone

Samsung's due to launch its new foldable phones in July this year. Since last year's upgrade was incremental, there's an expectation that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 will bring major improvements across all aspects of the device.

The latest grumblings from the rumor mill concern the Galaxy Z Fold 7's thickness when folded, a key metric of evaluation for foldable phones. The number that's floating around, if true, would make the Galaxy Z Fold 7 the world's thinnest foldable phone.

Rumor has it that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will measure 8.2mm thin when folded shut, a 0.7mm reduction over the Oppo Find N5, which currently holds the distinction of being the thinnest book-style foldable phone on the market.

This would also represent a reduction of over 30% in the thickness compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 6 which measures 12.1mm when folded. This would be a remarkable achievement, one that sets the Galaxy Z Fold 7 a league apart from the competition.

The 8.2mm number does contradict earlier reports which claimed a 9.5mm thickness for a folded Galaxy Z Fold 7 which seemed a lot more plausible. There's no information currently as to how Samsung will achieve such a drastic cut without taking an axe to crucial components that make the Z Fold series a bona fide flagship.

Many fans of the Galaxy Z Fold lineup will hope that it ends up becoming true. It just might be the shot in the arm the series needs to revitalize its position in the market, and for Samsung to make the price it charges for this device more palatable.
