I mean, it CAN save your games, but that's not all it can do.
Have you ever gotten your hands on a Dreamcast before? If you have, there's a good chance you remember the little VMUs that came with them. It stood for "Visual Memory Unit," and they were little memory cards you could save game data onto. Unlike other memory cards, these ones plug into your controller and have a little screen on them that you can see during play.
