Samsung can now predict if your home appliance is about to break down

Samsung has announced that it now uses AI to predict if your home appliance is about to face a breakdown. The feature is called AI Pre-Care Notification, and it is currently only being offered to people who brought home a smart appliance from Samsung through the AI Subscription Club program.

AI Pre-Care Notification notifies about possible breakdowns of smart home appliances with SmartThings

Samsung is strengthening its home appliances ecosystem with a feature called AI Pre-Care Notification. It uses AI to check the device's usage history and current condition to check if the home appliance could face a breakdown in the near future. Then, it notifies the home appliance's owner about it via the SmartThings app on their smartphone.

For example, SmartThings can detect if an air conditioner's refrigerant is lower than the recommended level or if a refrigerator's internal temperature is abnormal.

After notifying the user about device's diagnosis, it offers the explanation (possible reason) about an upcoming breakdown. It then offers on-site repair reservations for the appliance. This saves a user's efforts, money, and time, and saves them from major breakdowns.

The AI Pre-Care Notification is currently available for ten types of devices:

  1. Air conditioners
  2. Air dressers
  3. Dishwashers
  4. Dryers
  5. Induction cookers
  6. Kimchi refrigerators
  7. Microwaves/Ovens
  8. Refrigerators
  9. Robot vacuum cleaners
  10. Washing machines

Currently, this new feature is only being offered for free to those who are subscribed to Samsung's home appliances via the ‘AI Subscription Club' program that lets consumers use devices on a monthly subscription basis. The company is planning to expand its availability to more types of devices in the future.

Users will also get a ‘Monthly Care Report' once a month that provides information like device diagnosis results, device usage patterns, monthly energy usage, allowing them to check the status of the devices they are subscribed to.

Samsung needs to collect an appliance's usage information, which is something AI Subscription Club members agree to when subscribing to the program. However, they can deny the feature if they don't want their usage information being collected by the company.
