Samsung could adopt SUS CAN battery tech for future Galaxy phones

Samsung’s been under fire for years when it comes to battery tech. While rivals have pushed out faster charging and better battery life, Samsung has mostly played it safe. But that might finally change.

According to Korean publication The Elec, Samsung is preparing to use a new battery technology in future Galaxy phones. It’s not the much-hyped silicon carbon (SiC) batteries that Chinese brands are experimenting with. Instead, Samsung is reportedly betting on SUS CAN battery tech—short for “Steel Use Stainless.”

The benefits? Higher energy density, faster charging, and crucially, a fix for the battery swelling problem that’s plagued some Galaxy devices over the years. If you’ve ever had a Galaxy phone that bloated after a couple of years, you know how big of a deal this could be.

Apple has already moved to SUS CAN tech with the iPhone 16 Pro Max. It uses a stainless steel battery housing, which might not dissipate heat as well as aluminum but brings better durability and corrosion resistance. It also makes battery replacement easier—a timely move given the EU’s new rules around repairability.

Samsung hasn’t confirmed when this upgrade is coming, but early 2025 could be a good bet. There’s a chance we’ll see it in the Galaxy S26, especially since a prior leak claimed the Ultra model might pack a 5,500mAh battery. That’d be a big step up—and finally, a real reason to get excited about Samsung battery tech again.
