BOE is one of China's biggest display manufacturers and it's also fast becoming a serious competitor to Samsung Display globally. Even Apple has been buying OLED panels from BOE, most recently for its new iPhone SE.
Samsung Display does have some grievances against its main Chinese rival who it accuses of infringing on several of its patents on display technologies. It has already filed several lawsuits against BOE and has now filed yet another.
The policy of maximum pressure has been adopted
Samsung has filed a suit against BOE in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, claiming that BOE and its six units have infringed on its US Patent Nos. 11,574,990, 11,574,991, 10,439,015, and 10,013,088.
The company has previously reached out to BOE through a letter in May 2022, accusing it of infringing on its patents with the OLED panels that BOE had developed which were later used in devices like the Nubia Z60 Ultra, Red Magic 9S Pro, and others.
Both of these smartphones have a 6.8-inch OLED panel from BOE which Samsung claims infringes on its patent technologies covering OLED thin film transistor structure and cell structure. This is far from the only legal battle Samsung has waged against the company.
It's had some big wins against BOE in the United States, including a ruling last month that held BOE had infringed on three Samsung Display OLED patents. Samsung celebrated that by launching another legal torpedo at BOE claiming that it had been poaching Samsung Display employees and stealing the company's trade secrets in through firms in Samsung Display's supply chain.
Samsung's requesting damages and other compensation in this latest lawsuit which may play out for some time before a decision is reached. It's evident that Samsung has adopted a policy of maximum pressure on BOE to guard against alleged unauthorized use of its intellectual property.
