Google and Samsung working together to create reference Android XR hardware and software

At the Google I/O 2025 keynote event a few hours ago, Android XR Vice President Shahram Izadi revealed that Google is taking its “partnership with Samsung to the next level.” The two companies are working together to improve the Android XR ecosystem by creating reference hardware and software for AR glasses.

While they didn't reveal exactly who is responsible for which part, it is likely that Samsung is developing the reference hardware for AR glasses while Google is developing the Android XR software for those glasses. Their prototype AR glasses are already being used by developers and testers. More developers will get access to the development platform later this year.

The Google executive revealed that Android XR supports two types of AR glasses. One with just cameras, microphones, and speakers, and the other type that also features AR displays. The AR glasses with displays will likely cost more than the ones without.

Google also announced that eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker will be the first ones to make AR glasses with Android XR. There was no mention of Samsung as an AR glasses maker, but it is likely that the company will launch such glasses at a later stage, as Samsung is reportedly working on AR glasses of its own.
