Samsung looks to regain dominance with HBM4 mass production this year

Samsung has effectively lost out on the HBM3 gold rush to its local rival SK Hynix. The company remains unable to secure approval for its chips from NVIDIA, which remains one of the biggest buyers of high-bandwidth memory chips.

The company has made several improvements to its chips as well in hopes of clearing NVIDIA's certification tests but it hasn't been able to pull through. Samsung now hopes that it can have a different outcome with next-generation HBM4 chips.

HBM4 could mark a return to dominance for Samsung

Top Samsung Electronics executives recently met for the global strategy meeting where division heads spoke out regional and business-specific challenges. They also reviewed sales strategies and performance targets for the rest of the year.

During the session hosted by the semiconductor division, the focus remained on sales strategies for high-bandwidth memory chips and production schedules. Samsung needs to get things back on track in this segment, as it has lost out to SK Hynix, which also recently overtook it in the global DRAM market share for the first time ever.

Plans for production of the next-generation HBM4 chips were also reviewed during the meeting, with the company aiming to begin production of these memory chips in the second half of this year. Samsung believes that this chips would provide it with the edge it needs to reclaim its dominance in the memory market.
