Samsung remains the only smartphone manufacturer to use UDC (Under Display Camera), but the technology's future may be uncertain. As ambitious and groundbreaking as UDC is from a technical standpoint, Samsung may be having second thoughts about implementing it in future Galaxy devices. At least, that's what a recent rumor claims.
Citing industry sources, leaker and blogger yeux1122 has recently made a short post on the Naver platform. It states that although Samsung intends to use UDC for the next Galaxy model, i.e., the Galaxy Z Fold 7, the company is considering moving in a different direction.
As per the rumor, Samsung is finding it difficult to improve the technical characteristics, cost-effectiveness, and other aspects of Under Display Camera technology.
For these same reasons, Apple has supposedly postponed its plans for UDC-related tech and is in no rush to integrate UDC into its devices.
More importantly, the rumor says that Samsung's mobile division is “moving in a similar direction” as Apple, suggesting that Samsung might be having second thoughts about the implementation of UDC in future models, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 or its sequels.
Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition could hint at the future
The only device series that uses UDC is the Galaxy Z Fold, with one exception. Last year, Samsung released the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition in Korea and China, and this limited-edition device didn't adopt UDC.
Experience UDC on the Galaxy Z Fold 6
The Special Edition foldable can be viewed as an experimental phone Samsung used to break the mold. Rather than changing the existing Z Fold formula drastically, the company tried new ideas through the release of a limited-edition foldable.
However, the fact that the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition already skipped on UDC may hint at the idea that Samsung no longer views this technology as a necessity to express a state-of-the-art product. The costs related to UDC may be too high, and the potential for improvement may be too low.
On the other hand, a Galaxy Z Fold 7 leak from March indicates the opposite. It revealed that the next-gen foldable phone will have an improved Under Display Camera. In other words, Samsung doesn't seem to have given up on UDC and is planning to bring some improvements to the technology this year.
With that in mind, Samsung's view on UDC may not be as clear-cut as these latest rumors suggest. Then again, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 could be the last to use UDC. Either way, it's probably safer to take these latest rumors with a pinch of salt for now. We'll let you know if we find out more.
