Samsung Display has received an industry-first true bright marketing claim verification from UL solutions for its OLED displays. This is the first time that UL Solutions has issued such a verification for OLED panels evaluated using Perceptual Contrast Length (PCL) calculations.
PCL quantifies the brightness of the black of a display to the human eye through evaluating both physical light emissions and the contrast ratio. Based on this metric, Samsung's OLED panels deliver higher perceived brightness compared to LCDs.
UL Solutions tested 15 Samsung Display OLED panels for tablets, laptops, and automobiles in addition to seven QD-OLED panels for TVs and monitors. The tests verified Samsung's claims that its OLED and QD-OLED panels are on average 1.5 times higher in perceived brightness than LCD panels with the same PCL score.
The assessments revealed that Samsung Display's 300nit OLEDs have the same perceived brightness as 510nit LCDs, while its 500nit QD-OLEDs deliver the same results as 767-nit LCDs. This serves as a marketing claim verification for Samsung's True Bright, a distinction that the company gives to its displays that have a greater perceived brightness compared to LCDs.
It also indicates Samsung Display's technical prowess in delivering higher brightness with reduced power consumption, which is crucial for both consumer electronics and automotive applications where enhanced outdoor visibility is required.
The company commemorated this achievement at an awards ceremony held at Samsung Display Research in Giheung. Samsung EVP and Head of Mobile Display Marketing Team Jae-Nam Yun and UL Solution's VP and GM of Consumer, Medical & Information Technologies Sherry He were in attendance.
