Ever since Samsung announced a collaboration with Google and Qualcomm on extended reality or “XR” devices, it has been known that the company is working on a headset and smart glasses. Samsung has already showcased its Project Moohan headset and that's expected to be launched later this year.
It was believed that perhaps the smart glasses would also be launched alongside the headset in 2025. However, if a new report out of South Korea is believed, we may have to wait until next year to get our hands on this product.
XR headset may arrive this year, but the smart glasses may not
Samsung and Google are in close collaboration on this project, as Google's Gemini assistant would do much of the heavy lifting on this device. It will also be powered by Google's Android XR platform, an iteration of Android developer specifically for headsets, smart glasses, and other extended reality products.
Users would be able to access Gemini on the Samsung smart glasses with just one tap, and the assistant would help then with things like translations, directions, and even message summaries, without having to take their phones out.
Much of it remains a mystery, but Google has been testing it extensively. Shahram Izadi, a VP who leads AR and XR at Google, was recently spotted wearing a prototype of the smart glasses at the TED2025 conference this week where he also demonstrated some of its features.
Google is taking a larger role in Samsung's AI-powered devices. Even its Ballie robot now has Gemini embedded, so the search engine giant will undeniably be critical to Samsung's smart glasses ambitions as well.
Samsung's smart glasses are reportedly codenamed Project Haean, and rumors suggest that there may also be another XR device in the pipeline, codenamed Project Jinju. Exciting times ahead!
