At Nintendo Direct on 2 April 2025, the brand announced its latest gaming console, the Switch 2. At the event, the company revealed that it only supports microSD Express cards and also unveiled Samsung’s new microSD Express Super Mario Edition card for the console, which went on pre-order on 29 April 2025. Well, with the Nintendo Switch 2 going on sale today, Samsung’s microSD Express card for it is also now available to purchase.

Nintendo, Best Buy, Game Stop, Target, and Walmart have listed the Samsung microSD Express 256GB Super Mario Edition card on their websites and made it available to purchase in the United States. It costs USD 59.99. As the name suggests, it is painted red and has a Super Mario logo to make it go with the Switch 2. Sadly, it is available in only one storage option: 256 GB. Hopefully, the brand will soon launch it with higher storage capabilities.

How is microSD Express different from traditional microSD?

Nowadays, most microSD cards come with UHS-I, UHS-II, and UHS-III bus interfaces, and offer a speed ranging from 50 MB/s to 624 MB/s. On the other hand, microSD Express cards use NVMe and PCIe to offer a speed ranging from 985 MB/s to 3,940 MB/s, making them way faster.

However, most microSD Express cards currently available on the market offer speeds of around 900 MB/s. Unfortunately, there is no information about the speed of Samsung's microSD Express Super Mario Edition card. The brand's other microSD Express cards offer around 800 MB/s speed.

Why does Nintendo Switch 2 use microSD Express cards?

The games for Nintendo Switch 2 are much larger in size compared to those for the Nintendo Switch, offering much better graphics. It means that the new gaming console needs to read data from memory at a much faster rate than the older one. microSD cards with UHS-I, UHS-II, and UHS-III bus interface don’t offer the speed the Switch 2 requires. However, the microSD Express cards can do the job without any issues. As such, Nintendo went for it.

As expected, the demand for the Switch 2 is very high. Considering that most people are eager to play many games on it, many of them are looking to expand its storage with a microSD Express card. With only limited brands offering them, they could go out of stock in no time. Samsung’s Super Mario Edition microSD Express card, especially, may be in high demand as it is one of the only two offering looks that go with the Switch 2. So, grab one before it goes out of stock.
