Samsung’s mobile and appliances chief confident of overcoming crises

Samsung is facing severe challenges in multiple divisions. Its smartphone business is being rattled by Apple and Chinese brands, while its memory chip business is struggling to get Nvidia's certification for HBM chips. Its contract chip manufacturing business is constantly losing market share to rival TSMC.

However, TM Roh, the head of the company's appliances division (Samsung DX) and smartphone division (Samsung MX) is confident Samsung will overcome crises.

After recently taking the helm of Samsung's digital appliances division following the death of JH Han, TM Roh reportedly sent a second email to the company's executives. He said that he will focus even more on finding new businesses for future growth.

His message said, “Going forward, I plan to focus more on operating sales, which is a core element of design and user experience (UX) and revenue expansion, as the head of the division.

Explaining the role of Choi Won-Jun, Samsung MX's COO, he said, “He will be responsible for the supply-side organization, which underpins product competitiveness, including quality, customer experience (CX), manufacturing, and procurement. The division of roles is intended to secure faster and more flexible decision-making and bold execution under clear responsibilities.

On top of all the challenges, Donald Trump's decision to eventually bring tariffs on chips, laptops, and phones imported into the US will make Samsung's situation even worse. Roh said that the environment in the mobile division is changing rapidly, so there is a need to make quick decisions and act on them swiftly.

Roh said the he is feeling a heavy responsibility after taking an additional role (heading Samsung DX), but said he is confident that the company can succeed with the help of all the employees working together.

In an internal email that was sent earlier, Roh emphasized the need to reorganize the existing work methods to improve the efficiency and make the company's structure more nimble. He said Samsung's divisions need to collaborate better under the motto of “One Samsung.
