Ever since conventional device “contracts” ended in the United States, major carriers have been offering device installment plans to their subscribers, enabling them to stretch out the payments for their devices over two years or more.

AT&T and Verizon have offered 36-month device installment plans for a couple of years now while T-Mobile has stuck with 24-month plans so far, but a new report indicates that this may be about to change.

36-month installments would help lower monthly costs

The vast majority of customers in the United States purchase devices on these plans as it helps spread out the cost of the phone over two years or more, usually at 0% interest. So someone doesn't have to pay $1,899 upfront for a new Galaxy Z Fold, they can just pay in equal monthly installments.

T-Mobile hasn't joined its rivals in offering 36-month plans just yet, and has continued to offer 24-month plans only. According to The Mobile Report, this could change, as T-Mobile has launched an internal document explaining that 36-month installment plans are coming for select devices.

The carrier may have inadvertently confirmed this on its website when the product pages for some Galaxy Watch models on the T-Mobile website displays the new 36-month equipment installment plans, before the change was revoked.

This will be a useful change for Samsung fans on T-Mobile. They'll be able to pick up Samsung's best devices and spread the payments out for an additional year, thereby considerably reducing their monthly cost. It remains to be seen, though, which Samsung devices become eligible for this new plan.
