The Galaxy S25 Edge supports Samsung’s desktop PC experience

Before the Galaxy S25 Edge became official, some fans occasionally called it a Galaxy Z Flip without a hinge and a foldable display. It's easy to see why some would make that association, even if it may not be very accurate. Like the Flip, the Galaxy S25 Edge prides itself on thinness and has only two cameras.

However, that analogy turned out to be a gross oversimplification. The Galaxy S25 Edge has a vastly superior camera setup and is built from exotic materials. So, unless the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 7 boasts a titanium build and a 200MP camera, the analogy doesn't quite work. The Galaxy S25 Edge is also considerably thinner than any Flip phone, and despite its baffling dimensions, it still supports Samsung's desktop PC experience.

Galaxy S25 Edge supports Samsung DeX

Indeed, even though no Galaxy Z Flip model to date has offered Samsung DeX support, the Galaxy S25 Edge does.

The interesting part is that, back when the Galaxy Z Flip 5 was released, Samsung explained the reason why the Flip series never had DeX: insufficient cooling. The company tried to make DeX happen on the Galaxy Z Flip but failed due to inadequate “heatproof performance in the structure.”

Thankfully, for Samsung DeX fans, the Galaxy S25 Edge doesn't have this issue and does support the desktop environment.

Compared to the Galaxy Z Flip 6, the Galaxy S25 Edge is powered by the newer 3nm Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. Samsung also says the ultra-thin phone keeps its temperature in check thanks to a clever heatsink.

Galaxy S25 Edge also keeps its cool under sustained use thanks to a reconfigured vapor chamber that is now thinner, yet broader for steady heat dissipation.

Could this be an indication that future Galaxy Z Flip models, like the Galaxy Z Flip 7 onward, will also support DeX? Maybe, but at the moment, it's difficult to predict what will happen next.

Thinness appears to be a non-issue for the Galaxy S25 Edge. Or, at the very least, Samsung overcame the thinness issue with a broader heatsink. However, the Galaxy Z Flip series has a hinge right down the middle, and this may prevent the installation of an adequate vapor chamber.

The hinged design rather than thinness might be the biggest hurdle standing in the way of the Flip series getting DeX support. And yes, even though the Galaxy Z Fold is also hinged, it offers larger surface areas where a sizeable heatsink can be fitted.

Flip phones aside, the good news is that Galaxy S25 Edge users can fully enjoy DeX and use their ultra-thin phones as pocket desktop computers. It's officially the thinnest slab-type phone you can use for DeX.
