Adobe releases Photoshop for Android, it's free in beta

In February this year, Adobe launched Photoshop for iPhone. Now, it has released Photoshop for Android, and it's free for now.

This isn't the first time Adobe has brought its image editor to mobile devices, there was Photoshop Touch, which was discontinued in 2015. Then there is Photoshop Express Photo Editor, and of course, Lightroom.

Photoshop for Android lets you create images, custom graphics, collages. But the primary focus of the app seems to AI features. It offers Firefly-powered generative AI features like Generative Fill, which can be used to add or transform elements in visual designs. You can use the AI tools to remove backgrounds, swap it for something else, use the Tap Select tool to pick people or objects instantly. In addition to this it can create art by text prompts.

While the app does include core Photoshop tools like selections, layers, masks, clone stamp tool, magic wand, etc., but as Ars Technica points out it does not support filters, neither does it allow you to crop images using pixels/dimensions, it only supports cropping by ratio. The Content-aware fill is also not available, but is coming soon. Beginners can use the tutorials that are available in the app to learn how to work with layers, selections and other tools.

The AI-features in Photoshop for Android require monthly generative credits, but the good news is Android users can access all features in the app for free. Adobe's announcement says that all premium features are free during the beta. It is unclear when the beta program will end, but it will likely require a Creative Cloud Subscription that costs $20 per month.

Download Adobe Photoshop for Android from the Google Play Store. You will need to sign in to your Adobe account to use the app. It is compatible with devices running Android 11 or later, with a minimum of 6GB of RAM to use the app, though Adobe recommends 8GB or more for optimal performance.
