On Android Auto, most media applications look similar. That’s because the platform’s template for these apps offers limited customisations. That’s good and bad. On the positive side, it provides a consistent user interface across apps, which not only looks clean but also makes it easier for people to control them as things are in a similar place. On the negative side, it keeps developers from providing service-specific controls.
Well, Android Auto will soon offer more flexibility to developers when it comes to media app layout.
At Google I/O 2025, Google announced that Android Auto now offers two new templates for media applications, SectionedItemTemplate and MediaPlaybackTemplate.
The former allows developers to add more sections to the browsing UI. Google has demonstrated it by showing a Recent Search section above the Albums section.

The latter, which is the Now Playing screen, offers more flexibility over layout and controls. The brand demonstrated the feature by showing media playback controls on the left-hand side of the display rather than in the centre of the current layout.
Samsung's ultra-slim flagship phone is here!
Developers can leverage the two new templates and offer an upgraded layout, offering a fresh look and new features. Google is also working on upgrading Android Auto with support for browser and video apps. The band has also demonstrated a light theme for Android Auto.
