In April this year, Samsung filed a patent infringement lawsuit against the BOE, claiming that the Chinese display maker has been poaching the South Korean tech giant’s employees and stealing the company’s trade secrets for micro OLED displays. Well, there has been an interesting development in the battle.
BOE has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Samsung Display in the US. The Chinese display maker alleges that the South Korean tech giant’s OLED technology used in the panels with under-display camera, such as those on the Galaxy Z Fold series devices, infringes on four of its patents mentioned below:
- US11,037,994 – Display panel and manufacturing method thereof
- US12,266,309 – Display substrate and driving method thereof, and display device
- US12,307,976 – Display substrate and driving method thereof, display device
- US11,695,017 – Array substrate, display panel, and display device
According to The Elec, industry insiders believe that this is BOE’s countermeasure to patent infringement lawsuits filed by Samsung Display in April, as well as a way for the Chinese display makers to promote that it is ahead in the OLED development race in China.
Usually, patent lawsuits take several years to reach a resolution. Considering that, the production or sales of the Galaxy Z Fold series devices should not be affected for quite some time. Speaking of which, Samsung has just teased its upcoming book-style phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
