Samsung has been at the forefront of technology when it comes to the durability of foldable phones. It was the first brand to bring IPX8-rated foldable phones in 2021, and in 2024, the first company to launch IP48-rated foldable phones. However, Google might leave Samsung behind this year with a better IP rating for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold.

Google's Pixel 10 Pro Fold could have IP68 rating for dust and water resistance

According to a report from Android Headlines, the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold will launch with an IP68 rating later this year. It means the device will be as good as other slab phones like the Galaxy S25 Ultra in terms of dust and water resistance. Currently, Samsung's best foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Galaxy Z Fold SE, feature an IP48 rating. It means they can stay protected when submerged into water, but can't resist dust and dirt.

Even Vivo is launching its flagship foldable phone—X Fold 5—later this month with an IP59+ rating. This rating means that it can resist some dust and dirt and the phone can work even when it is subjected to jets of warm water. That is way better than what Samsung is currently offering with its foldable phones.

While Samsung is launching its next-generation foldable phones—Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 7—next month, there have been no reports about them bringing an improved IP rating for dust and water resistance. We hope Samsung brings a full IP68 rating to stay in the competition with other brands like Google, Motorola, and Vivo.

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold will launch on August 20, more than a month after the Galaxy Z Fold 7 launches on July 9, 2025. Google's foldable will reportedly feature a 50MP ISOCELL GNV primary camera, a 48MP ultrawide camera, a 48MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom, and a 50MP front-facing camera. So, it appears to have better telephoto, ultrawide, and selfie cameras than the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which has a 200MP primary camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, a 10MP telephoto camera, and a 10MP selfie camera.

Google's foldable will also have a bigger battery, considering that the Pixel 9 Pro Fold already has a 4,650mAh battery compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 7's 4,400mAh battery. It will also have a TSMC-made 4nm Tensor G5 chip and 16GB RAM. Samsung's upcoming foldable will likely have better performance and have a thinner and lighter body compared to the Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
