Samsung's air conditioners and Galaxy wearables are more connected than you might think. Did you know that select Samsung AC units can communicate with Galaxy Watches and the sleek Galaxy Ring and adjust ambient temperature throughout the night? Here's how it works and why it is important.
There is no one ideal ambient temperature that ensures a restful night. There are several optimal temperatures that vary according to different sleep stages. In 2015, Samsung partnered with Kyunghee University to find out which ambient temperatures are ideal for each sleep stage. Here's where these studies led.
There are five main sleep stages that comprise one full 90-minute cycle: falling asleep, REM sleep, and three NREM stages. This 90-minute cycle repeats four to six times during the night. And between each stage, you experience changes in brain wave patterns, eye movements, and body temperatures.
Each stage is associated with a different ideal room temperature. Once Samsung had all the data it required from its studies at Kyunghee University, it developed an algorithm that could control your air conditioner's settings as the night progresses and maintain the ideal temperature for each stage.
How does the air conditioner know when to adjust its temperature at any given time? By communicating with devices that can track your sleep, such as your Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring.

Samsung calls this technology Good Sleep Mode. It is available for air conditioners series AR-B, AR-C, AR-D, and AR-F. Throughout the night, Good Sleep Mode taps into the sleep data collected by your Galaxy wearable and adjusts the air conditioner by going through the following stages:
- When you fall asleep, the AC quickly lowers the temperature (within 5 minutes) to create a comfortable environment.
- The air conditioner maintains this optimal temperature for 90 minutes.
- After 90 minutes, Samsung's air conditioner will raise the temperature to prepare for the deeper sleep stages, when your body temperature and blood pressure drop and the ideal ambient temperature should be higher.
It's pretty bonkers. And so is the fact that although Samsung tested this technology for years, it became widely available in 2023. As of this writing, it is supported by select air conditioners and requires smartphones newer than the Galaxy S22 and the Galaxy Ring or the Galaxy Watch 4 or later.
